Chelsea: Viridian Artists presents “DIRECTOR’S CHOICE, 2023”, juried by Vernita Nemec, April 25–May 20, 2023 with an opening reception: Saturday, April 29, 4–6pm.
As always, Viridian makes a concerted effort to expand the opportunities for outstanding artists’ work to be seen and exhibited. Consequently, the gallery director, Vernita Nemec, also selects artwork from those submitted for our Juried Competitions, Virst showing her selections digitally with the juried exhibition and later when scheduling permits, as a new exhibition entitled “Director’s Choice.” At Viridian, we feel it important to tangibly demonstrate that curatorial choice is often as much about personal taste as it is about the “quality” of the art, for “quality” in art is often open to opinion. Also, during the Director’s Choice exhibit, we plan to show the art selected by the juror digitally, as we previously had shown the Director’s Choices so that gallery visitors can see both curatorial selections.
The competition selection as always is difVicult, but especially so for the nature of art in our world today encompasses a wide variety of methods, materials, and conceptualizations of what art is. Environmental and political concerns are more and more apparent in the art of the 21st century, and Nemec is especially interested in art that is concerned with these social issues and worldly concerns, particularly art that explores these concerns in new ways.
Curiously, both Ms. Ferrell and Ms. Nemec selected some of the same artists, despite the many outstanding and diverse submissions. And we are especially pleased that Stefani Bailey, Sungji Huh, Stephanie Lempres and Lauren Cassidy are now represented by Viridian Artists. We look forward to sharing this fascinating exhibition of timely contemporary art by artists we are sure you will see more of in the future.
