Artist Statement and Bio

The images I am interested in highlight what is often overlooked, bringing attention to displacement, adaptation and resilience through amplifying what may be tiny, hidden stories. I build my pieces using traditional pyrography converter boxes connected to nichrome wire pens, heat-sensitive chemicals, heat guns, butane torches and tiny carving tools. Color is applied with stains, (some of which I make myself), dyes and colored pencils, complementing the already detailed textures. I burn on plywood not just because it provides a smooth, grain-free surface, but because it is manufactured wood, and exemplifies a certain detachment from nature. I consider the work successful if it stimulates a conversation- an opportunity for education and connection on a more personal level.

I have a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in textiles, an MA from Lesley University in Expressive Therapies and an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art Design. I worked for over 25 years as an art therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts mental health system before returning to school for my MFA. I currently live in the Monadnock Region of North Central Massachusetts with my family. My work has been exhibited in Boston, and in galleries across the country.
